Monday, 07.07.2003 (Day 22)
Ok, I'm almost
caught up. I've uploaded days 15 - 19 so check them out.
I haven't heard from many of you lately so if you get a
chance, drop us a line. We've been in the car together for
over 3 weeks now so we welcome any outside conversation.
Thanks.

Wednesday, 07.02.2003 (Day 17)
Hi everyone.
Tonight we are staying with a friend of mine, Jeremy (from
CIMAR), in beautiful San Fransisco. This last week has been
quite a whirlwind. Liz and I spent several days in Las Vegas
and then headed out to L.A. Ever since Vegas we haven't
had many leisurely days so it's been hard to keep up with
the webpage. I've finished the rest of the last week so
check it out. Thanks.

Tuesday, 06.24.2003 (Day 9)
Hello again.
I've been hearing that the downloads are still taking forever
for people using dialup, so I've increased the compression
on the images that I post. The resulting size is about 1/4
of the original so the download should be much faster. Hopefully,
this should take care of any speed problems that anyone has.
If not, please let me know.
Monday, 06.23.2003 (Day 8)
Hi everyone. Sorry
about the long delay in posting days 3-7, but we've rarely ventured
out of the middle of nowhere in the last few days. The site
is now up-to-date, so please take a look at the new days. Also,
I appreciate all the emails. Keep em coming, we love hearing
from you. We'll see you soon.

Thursday, 06.19.2003 (Day 4)
Hi guys and gals.
After two days of driving we have finally made out of Texas. Texas
took twice as long as Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana
combined. The scenery was nice in western Texas and into southern
New Mexico, but we've been out of cellphone range almost the entire
time. The whole region is practically deserted. There were times
when we couldn't see another car to the horizon in either direction.
Yesterday we went
to the Caverns of Sonora. This cave system has been sealed off
from outside air so that the cave can continue to grow. This makes
for some spectacular cave structures that you won't see in most
other places. It was a lot of fun.
The path we are taking
led us from the Caverns of Sonora directly to the Carlsbad Caverns.
This is a much more popular cave system and I imagine many of
you are familiar with these caverns. The Carlsbad Caverns are
absolutely unbelievable. They do not have as many of the living
cave structures as Sonora, but the scale of this place is
unimaginable. The cavern roof in most places is 50 to 80 feet
above your head, and in some places you can see up hundreds of
feet. The whole place seemed too vast to be real. I felt like
I was in a movie.
Right now we are
in Taos, a city in northern New Mexico. Liz's aunt Cynthia and
uncle Bob were nice enough to let us stay with them for the night.
This place is unbelivable, by far the most beautiful place we've
been so far. The house is surrounded on three sides by mountains,
and the fourth side overlooks the city of Taos. I've taken lots
of pictures, so check them out.
-Tony
P.S. This website
has become a little cumbersome for this trip so I'm cutting some
of the fancy stuff out. All the pictures will still be there though.
Tuesday, 06.17.2003 (Day 2)
Hello everyone. Let me start out by
apologizing for the Day 1 page. I've been spoiled by our high-speed
connection at home and didn't think about how long it can take to
download pictures on a modem. I'll try to cut some of the fat for
the future posts. Also, Liz and I decided that it's too much work
to write separate comments, so from now on we'll just post together.
Today we left Covington, LA and continued
our trek west. It was another fairly uneventful day, but we managed
to break up the monotony by stopping at Vermilionville (a Cajon/Creole
heritage park). The park itself wasn't nearly as interesting as the
AAA book made it sound, but it was still nice to stretch our legs
for a little bit.
We were hoping to make it to San Antonio
tonight, but decided to stop in Houston instead. Liz found us a cheap
hotel to stay at tonight... but it's no Hilton. It's so dirty that
Liz actually refuses to take her socks off in the room. Hey, it just
adds another experience to the trip.
-Tony
P.S. I've had problems loading all
of the pictures on the day pages. You may need to click refresh a
couple of times before everything loads.

(Day 1)
Well, we've made it
through our first day of our road trip. Today was pretty rough,
but we had to get through the southeast before we could do any of
the fun stuff. Liz and I are in Mandeville, LA right now. Hopefully,
we can start the more interesting things tomorrow. Today the only
place we stopped at was at the University of Florida to drop off
copies of my research. Other than that we drove for nearly 11 hours
(most of the time in torrential rain).
Most of the trip was
rather dull, but I found Mobile, AL pretty interesting. There is
a huge naval shipyard right off of the interstate, which employed
a huge arsenal of cranes, smoke stacks, and any other type of industrial
equipment you can imagine. This industrial area, when combined with
the red glow from the sun at dusk, seemed like a post-apocalyptic
scene from a Mad Max movie. I thought it was facinating, but Liz
just thought it looked dirty.
I've posted the pictures
that came out on the Day 1 page. Enjoy.
Sunday, 06.15.2003
We are leaving for our big crosscountry
road trip tomorrow. I just thought I'd drop a few lines in here to
let everyone know how the site will work. First of all, everything
written in this color of blue is written by me. Anything
Liz writes will be shown in this shade of red. I'll try to
add new pictures from our trip daily, but since we may be sleeping
in the car some of the nights, that might not be possible. Whenever
I post new pictures I'll add a link on the left. We will be checking
my email account whenever we upload the new pictures so please drop
us an email. My email address is:
ahinson1@ufl.edu
You may email myself or Liz at this account.
Thanks for stopping by and we'll be seeing many of you soon.
- Tony
P.S. Please let me know if anything on the
site doesn't work correctly. Thanks.
